8 Wellness Habits To Prioritize This Fall

Cozy season is here! While I’m all for bed rotting and binge watching the newest trending shows, it’s also important to balance that with some healthy habits. If you don’t know where to start in that area, I’ve got you covered. Keep reading to find some wellness habits you may want to prioritize this fall.

8 Wellness Habits To Prioritize This Fall

The following habits are great to have year round, but especially during the fall. Some will help keep your immunity high to ward off sickness during flu season, and others are great for keeping you mentally refreshed.

Taking Vitamins/Supplements

If you don’t take vitamins regularly, the fall season is a great time to start. I’m not saying you need to take every vitamin from A to Z, even just a multivitamin can be a great way to stay balanced in your nutrition.

There are a few others that can be crucial to take during the cooler months. I recommend Vitamin D, since we aren’t in the sun as long to help with healing when sickness does come,, and Vitamin C to help protect your body from toxins that can get you sick.

taking vitamins and supplements to support wellness during the colder months

If you are new to vitamin talk and are wondering where to start I recommend doing two things. First make an appointment to get bloodwork done so that you can see your levels.

This will let you know if you are in danger of being deficient in any essential vitamin. Then read up on vitamins (what they do, how to tell if you have a deficiency, foods to eat to boost your levels).

Trust me, having a vitamin deficiency is not fun. I found out I had a vitamin D deficiency my last year of college.

It was the worst time for it to happen because I had such a hard time staying awake enough throughout the day. I was tired all the time! Once I found out and started taking supplements I felt much better.

Skincare to Prioritize this Fall

The products your skin loves in the summer time may not work as well in the cooler months. In fact, each season comes with different skincare concerns you need to address.

For fall and Winter you’ll want to increase hydrating products. One thing that should not change is your sunscreen. That is a non-negotiable for healthy skin year round.  For more skincare tips check out these GenTwenty posts:

Sleep

If you don’t have a great nighttime routine, the fall is a great time to start one. It doesn’t need to be something complicated that has 20+ steps, unless that works for you. The best night routine for you will be one that helps you get to sleep around the same time consistently and have good quality sleep.

Like morning routines, there are a plethora of night time activities that you could add to your routine. It can be hard to figure out what you should do. Here is what I recommend you start with. Everything else you can figure out as you try different activities.

  • Decide on a timeframe for your nighttime routine: When do you want to start winding down and when do you need to be asleep to feel rested in the morning?
  • Give yourself a cue that it’s time to wind down: Cues are a big part of the habit loop ( see the books Atomic Habits or The Power of Habit). So find something that can signal your brain that it’s time for bed. My cue is putting my alarm on and putting my phone down.

Good Hygiene

This one goes without saying throughout the year. It’s worth reminding you though that we are entering the cold and flu season. As the air is colder and people spend more time indoors, germs stick around and spread more easily.

This means you may want to wash your hands more frequently, and keep the disinfectant handy. Being sick is no fun, simple things like washing your hands more often could be the key to warding off your next cold.

Digital Detox to Prioritize this Fall

I’m always a fan of taking a digital detox from time to time. If you haven’t done one in a while, fall is the perfect time to do one.

It’s great to do when you feel like social media is getting overwhelming, you notice your screen time reaching unhealthy amounts, and/or you want a break from digital consumption and lock in on other things. We’ve got great advice on how to do a digital detox and the benefits of it. Check some of these posts out.

Cozy Fall Healthy Eating

Spring may be my favorite season but I love fall cooking and baking. If you are trying to focus on your wellness, you can still enjoy fall eats. There are many recipes to be found for healthier versions of your favorite fall meals. Some of my favorites that I return to every fall are:

  •  Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins from Ambitious Kitchen: The perfect yummy breakfast that makes your kitchen smell like fall.
  •  Broccoli Cheddar Soup from Skinnytaste: I love the Panera broccoli cheddar soup, especially in the cooler months. This is a great, healthier, home version.
  •  Peanut Butter Cups from Don’t Waste The Crumbs: I eat these year-round. If you are craving some Halloween candy this is the perfect healthy solution.

Getting Outside

In my opinion, fall is the perfect season for outdoor activities. The weather is perfect, not too hot or too cold, and there is so much to do! From picnics and foliage walks to pumpkin patches and apple picking, there is no shortage of fall fun to be had outdoors.

Spending time outside has great health benefits as well. It’s not just great for your physical health, your mental, and even social health can benefit as well.

Sunday Reset

Last up in the wellness habits you should prioritize this fall is doing a weekly Sunday reset. This is a habit that you can benefit from year-round but, if you haven’t started doing it yet, now would be the time to start.

Sunday Resets are like night time routines in that there are a plethora of options. Don’t feel pressure to do it all. The best Sunday reset is the one that gets you realigned with your goals and ready for a new week. However you do that is up to you.

These are some activities that I have done on Sundays, but there is more where that came from. Test out a few and see what works best for you.

  • Journal: Reflect on the week and set intentions for the next one
  • Habit Tracker: Fill out any I missed this week and review how I did
  • Plan the week ahead: Do I have any appointments, meetings, deadlines, etc. and what is my work schedule?
