10 Affordable Outdoor Fall Activities That Won’t Hurt Your Wallet

There are so many things we want to do… but everything has gotten so expensive! It almost makes you just want to stay home, doesn’t it? But we don’t want that! So let’s explore some affordable outdoor fall activities that anyone can manage.

We want you to be outside, getting some fresh air; hanging out with friends and family, making great memories; or going on that date and falling in love with your soulmate. All of that may seem far fetched, but it doesn’t have to be, especially during the fall season.

Everyone correlates outdoor fun with the spring and the summer, but what about the fall? It’s a great time to be outside! It’s not as hot as it was during the summer, but it’s not yet as cold as it gets during the winter.

You can enjoy being outside without being sweaty or needing to bundle up. Sure you may have to take a sweater or light jacket with you, but who cares! That’s not a problem at all.

Fall Outdoor Activities Anyone Can Afford

If your concern is more about the expense of going out, we get it. Things are expensive. But there are still plenty of activities – especially ones you will enjoy doing during the fall season – that won’t hurt your wallet. Which ones are we talking about? These are the ones you’re going to want to try this fall.

1) Go on a Nature Walk

One of the best things about the fall is watching the leaves on the trees turn colors. They’re beautiful to see! Assuming you live in an area where there are at least some trees – or at the very least a park – all you need to do is walk out of your house and start walking. Remember to stop and smell the roses, or in this case, take in the colorful leaves!

This won’t cost you a dime and you will even find yourself relaxing. If you do have some budget to spend, take a roadtrip to an area that’s known for their fall foliage. You can make it a day trip so you don’t have to spend money on a hotel, or if you know someone in that area, ask to crash at their place.

2) Go on a Hike – An Eternally Affordable Outdoor Fall Activity

If you love hiking and all things outdoors, take your nature walk out of your neighborhood and onto the hiking trail. There are likely a few trails close to you for you to choose from.

You’ll still get to enjoy nature, just with a bit of a more aggressive workout! The fall is a great time to go on a hike as you can take advantage of the crisp air and see the colorful leaves at your local trail or parks.

3) Have a Picnic

Why are spring or summer the times that are associated with having a picnic? Fall is a great season to have one, too. Think of it – you’re sitting on the grass, in the crisp air, laying under a tree filled with colorful changing leaves.

Doesn’t that just sound relaxing… and a bit romantic?! If you want to elevate the experience, pack some wine or champagne for your picnic, too, just make sure the spot you’re having the picnic at allows beverage consumption!

4) Stay Up and Stargaze

When you think of stargazing, you probably think of the summer season. But stargazing is just as great – if not better – as an affordable outdoor fall activity.

Why? All thanks to having some cooler nights and more clear skies. This makes for the perfect time for watching constellations.

5) Head to the Pumpkin Patch

Fall and pumpkins are synonymous. Is it really fall if you didn’t head to the pumpkin patch and post it on Instagram? Many farms offer free or cheap entry into their pumpkin patch, making it an easy place to go and enjoy some fall fun.

It’s also a good way to get content for your social media, too, if that’s something important to you. Most of the time, you just have to pay if you want to take a pumpkin home with you.

6) Go Apple Picking as a Affordable Outdoor Fall Activity

Just like pumpkin patches and fall are synonymous, apple picking is up there too. Many farms offer free or cheap entry into their orchards; most charge by the bag or pound, meaning you can keep it as low-cost as you want it. Orchards are another great place to really take in the fall season, and to get some fall content for your social media, too.

7) Go to a Fall Festival or Farmer’s Market

There is likely so much fall fun happening right in your community, whether it’s a fall festival or a farmer’s market. Most are free to enter and are filled with local food, crafts and live music.

You may end up spending money on things while you’re there, but that’s all to your discretion. You can always just walk around, take in the live music or any other events happening, and be part of the lively atmosphere.

8) Have a Bonfire

The nights are getting cooler, making it a great time to sit around the bonfire in sweatshirts and warm up! Have your friends over, roast some marshmallows and tell stories – your choice if you want to make them scary stories or not. We will say, scary stories would be on point for the fall, with Halloween happening!

9) Host Football Sunday

Football is back! Have all your friends over all day on Sunday to watch the games together. You can provide food and beverages, or you can make it a potluck where everyone brings something to help ease the cost.

Make it fun and ask everyone to bring their favorite beer or appetizer. Use a projector to take this affordable activity outdoors in the beautiful fall weather.

10) Jump Into a Pile of Leaves

We know what you’re thinking – that’s just for kids. Well, it’s a good time to release your inner kid! Rake a big pile of leaves and jump right into them! You’ll have just as much fun as you did when you were a kid. If you do have kids, bring your kids and do this together. They are sure going to love jumping into leaves with you!
