10 Tips For Starting The Semester Off Right
You’ll find a variety of tips on this list to help you in all areas of college life. From getting ahead in classes, developing a social life, and more.
1. Find Your Classes The Day Before Classes Start
This is a tip for anyone attending classes in-person. I didn’t think to do this my first year of college, but I made sure to do it the following years. It’s especially crucial if your campus is big and you’ve got classes back to back on some days.
Do a walkthrough of what your typical day would be like going from class to class. Be aware of your surroundings as you are finding the classrooms so that you can determine where you can spend time in-between classes.
2. Buy A Planner
A few days into my first few college classes I determined I would need a planner to keep my classes straight. Since that realization I have become obsessed with planners and how helpful they can be. Even if that doesn’t feel like how you’ll be, a planner is still a college essential. There are a variety of planners that you can purchase to fit your needs. Your college may even have some if you want to show some school pride.
I’m always recommending a Happy Planner planner because of the different options you have in terms of design and layout. Whether you are a week-at-a-glance person, or like to plan everything down to the hour, there is a Happy Planner for you.
3. Find A Study Spot
Odds are you’ll be having a lot of late night, early morning, and anytime in-between study sessions. It’s a good idea to get acquainted with different study spots on campus to see what feels the most comfortable to you. You may have to try out a few different areas until you find where you are most productive.
4. Be Aware Of Your Resources
Your school offers resources to you while you are a student there. It’s important to be aware of all that is available to you while you are there. Career help and preparation, student discounts, and mental health resources are just a few of the resources that you could potentially have available to you.
You can find out about these resources by looking around on your school’s website, asking around, or meeting with someone in the department you are seeking help with (for example: the career center).
5. Review Your Syllabi
I know this can be a mundane task, but college syllabi really do have a lot of information in them. One of the most important information pieces is when tests and big assignments are. Then you’ve got information on when your professor’s office hours are (we’ll talk about that in a few more points). The bottom line is, don’t skip out on reading through your syllabi.
6. Make An Effort To Connect With Others
College is a great time to get out of your comfort zone. One of the best ways to start the semester off right is to get connected with others early on. Whether it’s a roommate, hallmate, classmate, or someone else, connecting with others is a big part of the college experience. The longer you put it off the harder it will be to form those friendships.
7. Have Conversations With Your Professors
Your professors hold a wealth of knowledge about the industry you want to go in, and many have connections too. While you are attending college classes, really utilize your professors’ office hours.
They are there to help you understand class material, give you advice on the industry you are wanting to go into, give you a letter of recommendation, and more.
8. Find A Productivity System That Works For You
With so many different assignments, studying, and trying to balance a social life inbetween it all, it’s important for your work time to be productive. Procrastination can get to the best of us.
If we know what productivity system keeps us on track the best, we can lessen the procrastination. Some of the productivity methods you may want to look into are time blocking, the Eisenhower Matrix, Eat The Frog, and The Pomodoro Method.
9. Set Some Goals
Goals are important for anything in life, college is no exception. Before your semester gets going, think of what you want to accomplish and do over the next few months. Are you aiming to get on the Dean’s List? Will you be joining in on more campus events? Think about the whole college experience and decide what you want to partake in and go for this semester.
10. Get Involved In Your School
College is only a few years of your life. Why not make the most of those years through lots of great memories? Most campuses have a variety of activities, clubs, and events that you can join in on. Take some time out of your schedule to get involved in these things. The memories you make through those activities are the stories you’ll tell in the future.
Find Your Balance
Between classes, studying, friends, activities, and more, college can get overwhelming. The key is to find your balance with it all. Don’t overcommit yourself too much. If you do that it won’t be fun anymore because you’ll get burnt out. It may take some trial and error, but you’ll find your balance, and when you do keep it there.
College is a wonderful, informative, fun, and sometimes overwhelming experience. Take some of the overwhelm away by following some of these tips as you start your new semester.
