There have been so many new buzzwords in the wellness industry over the past few years. It’s hard to keep them all straight, much less figure out if they are actually essential to your wellness. Here is where it becomes important to make sure these wellness trends are demystified.
And, that’s why I wanted to do some research on these new wellness trends that have popped up as of late. I’m putting it all together in this post so that you can discern for yourself which wellness trends are worth your time, and sometimes money. Time to check out a few common ones and see these wellness trends demystified.
6 Wellness Trends Demystified
These are the wellness trends that you may be seeing your favorite influencer participating in, your co-worker researching, or the health brands talking about. Some you may be hearing about for the first time as they are just starting to take off. Let’s explore together what they all mean, and whether or not they are worth the hype.
1) Biohacking
Biohacking is a trend that seems to get more popular year by year. The term can cause some confusion as it sounds more complicated than it actually is, at least in my opinion. The basics of biohacking is making small changes to optimize your wellbeing. Some may call it DIY biology or even doing experiments on your body.
Biohacking can be done by doing simple habit swaps, tracking information about how your body reacts to things, and even more technological measures like implanting a microchip or using wearable technology. Some less extreme measures that I’m excited to try out are:
- Intermittent fasting
- Brain exercises
- Elimination diet
- Meditation
Hopefully this breakdown helps to demystify this wellness trend for you. To learn more about this topic check out this documentary or this podcast episode.

2) AI Generated Workout Plans
With the rise of AI many people are finding ways to use it to their advantage. One of my favorite ways to do this is by having Chat GPT create workouts for me.
I like this because you can be as detailed as you’d like and set your experience level. The most recent time I did this helped me navigate gym workouts for the first time. Other times I’ve told Chat GPT the exercises I couldn’t do and the equipment I had at home and it created the best workout routine for me to do.
3) Cold Plunges – Another Popular Wellness Trend Demystified
Cold plunges are not a new idea, but it is gaining in popularity. Previously a wellness activity mostly associated with athletes, it’s now more widespread. There is still more research to be done, but some benefits associated with cold plunges are enhanced mood, increased energy, and stress regulation.
As cold plunges become more popular, they have been popping up more and more. There are not only specific businesses for this wellness activity, but they are also more available for personal use to buy at places like Dick’s Sporting Goods and Amazon.
4) Red Light Therapy
Now let’s shift our attention to the health of our largest organ, the skin. Red light therapy is gaining in popularity as a way to treat skin conditions, reduce aging, and more.
For those of you who haven’t heard of red light therapy before, it’s the process of “repetitively exposing your skin to low levels of red and near-infrared light for a certain period of time.” While more research needs to be done on the benefits of this kind of light exposure, many people have come to adapt this trend into their wellness routine.

5) Wellness Travel
For those that can afford it, wellness travel is a big trend lately. People are foregoing the idea of jam-packed itineraries and swapping out their vacation for something more grounding.
Wellness travel is a great way to get away from everyday life and truly focus on bettering yourself. There are a couple of ways to go about this. Fortunately is it not too hard to demystify this wellness trend.
You can book a stay at a retreat designated for a certain theme/activity, or find ways to add more wellness into a typical vacation. Some examples are booking a hotel that has a spa, going on a nature walk or hike nearby, and choosing to make the vacation device free.
6) Sleep Optimization
Sleep is an important key to overall wellness that many people have overlooked. Lately the conversation has shifted and people are wanting to learn how to get beneficial rest.
Just because you sleep the recommended amount of hours, doesn’t mean it was good sleep. Which explains why you may wake up still tired. That is where sleep optimization comes in, also known on TikTok as “Sleepmaxxing”
Some things you can do to optimize your sleep is to set up a consistent night time routine and gather information about the quality of your sleep through a smart watch, app, or Oura ring.
Be wary about the things you try though. You don’t need to have a 10 step night time routine because someone on TikTok has one that long. Test things out and see what works for you, but even before that make sure you do your research.

The Bottom Line
Trends come and go all the time. When it comes to wellness it’s important not to rely on every trend you come across. What works for that influencer you follow, your co-worker, or even your best friend isn’t guaranteed to work for you.
I say this not to discourage you from trying these, or any other wellness trends out there, but to warn you to be cautious and do your research before jumping on the bandwagon. Maybe reading this will encourage you to demystify some wellness trends yourself. If something works for you, that’s great! If something doesn’t, don’t try to force it just because it’s the popular thing at the moment.
