3 Ways to Transition Your Style For Fall

The leaves are changing color, the air is getting crisper, and the smell of pumpkin spice is in the air.

Autumn is here, friends! Here at GenTwenty, we are so excited to face a brand new season. It’s time to pack away our bathing suits and pull out our chunky fall wardrobes.

Making the switch from summer to fall clothing can be a bit monumental. The way we dress says a lot about ourselves; it’s often more of a statement than just an everyday act.

Fall is the perfect time to show off your style. Whereas the summer is too hot to care what you look like half the time, and winter outfits are covered by bulky outerwear, fall provides the ideal temperature for dressing how you want to without worrying about the weather interfering with your ‘fit!

Transitioning your style from summer to fall doesn’t have to be a huge adjustment—and it doesn’t need to hurt your wallet either! There are a few simple but effective ways that you can make subtle changes to your everyday look to fit a more autumnal aesthetic.

So, it’s time to put your best-dressed foot forward and “fall” into style with these three quick and easy tricks!

3 Ways to Transition Your Style For Fall

1. Modify Your Color Palette.

Summer is all about vibrant, eye-catching colors—blues and pinks rule the wardrobe of a sun-worshipper. As the months grow colder, the colors blend into warmer and earthier tones.

One of the easiest ways to add a bit of spice to your fall attire without breaking the bank is by adding some different colors to your rotation. You can completely transform your look by switching out your beachy blues for olive greens or swapping your hot pinks for deep red wines.

As I mentioned earlier, warm earth tones tend to dominate this season. If you’re having trouble figuring out what colors are best suited for fall, look up! Fall foliage is a great source of inspiration for finding that gorgeous autumn palette for your wardrobe.

If you wear makeup, a fun way to add a bit of autumn flair to your color palette is by switching up some of your products. Instead of a pink lip, maybe go for a darker plum shade.

2. Layer Up!

Whether it’s for warmth or for fashion, autumn provides an ideal opportunity for pulling out all your best sweaters, scarves, and hats.

Layering is a great way to combine comfort and style, by allowing you to dress cute but stay warm in these cooler months!

Traditional layering techniques have ruled autumn and winter fashion trends for years. Personally, there’s nothing I love more than a chunky knit sweater topped by a wool coat (but more on that in a second!). In earlier months, fall temperatures can be finicky and unpredictable—I’m sure we’ve all experienced the dreaded “cold in the morning, hot in the afternoon” weather. This is what makes layering so great, as you can easily strip off the top layers, such as a coat, when it gets warm throughout the day.

Recently, we’ve seen some variations on the layering look pop up. One popular trend involves the “shacket” or shirt jacket—aka the newest article of clothing that you need in your wardrobe. The shacket isn’t quite as heavy as a proper jacket but provides much more warmth than a shirt. It looks like a flannel shirt and can be paired with just about anything underneath. That new slim-fit crop top you bought? Effortlessly fashionable. A turtleneck? Perfectly chic. It’s an extremely versatile option that you can mix and match to create a ton of looks.

3. Invest in a Good Coat.

Fall can be a pretty pricey time for a lot of people, especially those who are preparing for the upcoming holiday season. While the style hacks presented so far have been affordable or at no cost at all, there’s one thing that you might want to consider splurging on: a great coat.

If you’re looking to invest in a new coat for fall and winter, but you want it to withstand the micro-trends dominating the fashion industry right now, you can’t go wrong with a beautiful wool coat.

To me, there’s nothing better than having that one perfect coat that you can easily throw on top of any outfit and walk out the door feeling confident that you’re rocking a look without having to put much thought into it. A wool coat is a staple in anyone’s wardrobe.

Although a wool coat might seem overdone or unoriginal, there are many ways that you can style it as well. Not to mention, wool coats come in so many styles that you can easily find one that is compatible with your own unique brand. For instance, my favorite take on this staple is the tie-waist coat. I love how this looks and how easy it is to style with just about any outfit!

As the seasons shift, it may be tricky to find ways to adapt your style. However, by following these three easy hacks, you’ll be ready for your first Pumpkin Spice Latte of the season in no time!
