The French fashion files: An interview with Montreal fashion blogger Jessica Concannon

JessicaConcannon

I recently returned back to the states after spending seven months in Montreal, Quebec – a city that embraces French culture and art. I was very interested in learning more about the French Canadian fashion scene, so I discovered the Westmount Fashionista blog which is written by Jessica Concannon. As a personal shopper and buyer, Jessica has been part of the fashion industry for years. She moved from the states to Montreal for love and has immersed herself into the design scene through her popular blog.

Today, we’re unlocking the French files and learning the secrets to being as chic as the French through Jessica.

GenTwenty: How would you describe fashion scene in Montreal?

Jessica Concannon: I love how diverse Montreal is and I find that is reflected in the style you see on the streets, in local boutiques and in our fashion publications. Montreal is such a melting pot of different cultures and you really see their influence on Montreal style. One area that I find Montreal girls really excel in style wise is staying fashionable even in the most brutally cold months. From beautiful coats and chunky knits, to functional but somehow still fashionable footwear, Montreal girls still look amazing even in the dead of winter.

G20: What are your fashion must-haves for young women?

JC: I’m a big proponent of building a timeless wardrobe for yourself, investing in high quality staples like a beautiful leather bag or a classic trench coat, and saving money on trendy pieces. Take the time to save money and treat yourself when your wallet allows for it. Some of my other favorite closet staples are a well-tailored blazer, the perfect fitting pair of jeans (take your time and find the cut that works best for you), a cocktail dress that makes you feel amazing, and beautiful pump that can transition from day to night.

G20: Who is your style icon? Where do you find your fashion inspiration?

JC: My two biggest style icons are Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn; their style is so classic and still endures due to its elegance and simplicity. There’s something about a nipped waist or a skinny cigarette pant that I will always fall for. I also draw a lot of inspiration from my maternal grandmother and great grandmother. They were fearless in their fashion choices but never allowed the clothing to wear them. They knew that investing in designer pieces was worth it when the items were timeless and could be worn for years to come. I still carry bags that my grandmother purchased over twenty years ago.

G20: How can American 20-something females adapt French-Canadian style?

JC: Invest in a beautiful winter coat, something that is well-constructed and fashionable but doesn’t make you resemble a giant marshmallow. Montreal girls are also amazing at layering, they know how to bundle up and still look chic. Embrace beautiful knits and layering staples like infinity scarves.

G20: What are the top trends right now for females in Montreal?

JC: A bold red lip, an effortless little moto jacket from a great Montreal-based label like Mackage, and stylish flat boots are trends that I’m loving on Montreal ladies and that will look wonderful no matter where you’re from.
