To be successful in just about anything in life, organization is key. ?

At work especially, you’ll want to stay on top of things like keeping your to-do list fresh, maintaining a record of your calendar, and marking steps toward reaching your goals.

Keeping yourself organized ensures that you’re staying on track and being your best self each day. In order for you to perform to your highest capabilities and be most efficient, you need to be organized.

1. Utilize a calendar.

Whether you prefer a physical planner or digital log, get yourself a calendar to help you stay on track.

Sometimes it can be a challenge to figure out what needs to go on your calendar without cluttering it up. Make rules about how you are going to stay organized.

For example, things you would include on your calendar are:

  • Deadlines for work projects (also consider moving up deadlines for yourself so you’ll be finished your work early)
  • Reminders for client or team meetings
  • Your days off
  • Documents you need from other people

Consider color-coordinating dates based on priority and level of importance. This comes along with prioritization and will help you focus less on the details and more on the work.

2. Keep a stack of notepads or notebooks handy.

Notepads are great for several reasons. Firstly, they’re convenient for when you have to jot a quick note for yourself. If the phone rings and you want to record the importance pieces of information from the call, a notepad is the perfect place to take notes. No more having them wait around for you to grab a pen — you’ll always be prepared.

If a colleague asks you to do something while you’re in the midst of another project, a notepad is a fantastic thing to have handy to write a reminder for yourself to come back to after you’ve completed your current task.

In addition to convenience, notepads are also ideal for recording your to-do list. Jot down bullets on a notepad and cross them off as you complete each task. You’ll be surprised by how much you can complete in a work day when your notepad is keeping you on track.

And as a HUGE bonus — you’ll always look put together and prepared. Plus you get to buy all the cute notebooks you want. Talk about a win-win.

3. Maintain a planner separate from your calendar.

Unlike a calendar of important dates and meetings, a planner is ideal for logging and tracking your goals. We set big goals for ourselves like losing a significant amount of weight or saving up a sizable cushion of money.

The same concept applies in the workplace.

Maybe you have a career goal to earn a promotion or reach a sales metric in your company. Perhaps you have your heart set on a pay raise or taking on more responsibilities in your office.

Whichever scenario you find yourself in, a planner is a great tool to track your goals. Set small goals each week and larger ones for each month and use your planner to track your progress towards your goals.

4. Use sticky notes for immediate physical reminders.

Sticky notes are super fun and practical. They’re small enough that they don’t take up much space on your desk but they come in a variety of bright colors to make you notice them.

Invest in a small set of sticky notes to stay on task. You can jot down reminders for high priority tasks that you can stick to your computer monitor, cork board, or the like. When you finish a task, it’s as simple as tossing the sticky note in the recycling bin.

5. Set reminders in your phone and utilize alarms.

If there’s one thing we always have in our purse or bag, it’s our phones. We are a generation of tech savvy souls with smartphones handy. Why not use it as a tool to keep yourself organized?!

Whether it’s a reminder for a doctor’s appointment or an upcoming meeting for work, a digital reminder will prompt you to arrive on time and follow through with the meetings you schedule.

Reminders are especially great because you can set multiple reminders for the same event. From a 24-hour reminder to a 15-minute alarm, you can rest assured reminders on your phone will keep you organized and on task.

Keeping organized at work is bound to make you a successful and efficient young professional. Whether you’re investing in a planner to record your goals, marking meetings on your calendar, or crossing off tasks on your to-do list, take organization to a whole new level by making it your priority. You will thank yourself by being so on top of things in your workplace.
