Whether you’re looking for the first wheels for your little one or the perfect gift for a second baby, look no further – Strider has got you covered. Their balance bikes have taken my kids from age 1 to 7 and even my big kids still love to jet around on their balance bikes.
As a parent, there’s something really special about watching a kid learn how to ride a bike for the first time. It’s one of those little milestones that somehow feels bigger than it is. It’s a little bit chaotic but also exciting and emotional to watch them persevere and figure it out. It’s a step into independence for their little brains and bodies.
It is a process to learn how to ride a bike which is one reason we’ve been a balance bike family since day one. Strider has come out with a new release of their balance bike — the Strider 12 Comp Balance Bike. It’s their 12″ balance bike that now comes in a ultra-durable compostie frame and new bright colors!
The Perfect First Ride with Strider 12 Comp Balance Bike
Balance bikes have quietly become such a go-to for parents—and Strider is a brand that just makes sense from the start as they grow with your family.
Why We’re a Balance Bike Family
As a mom of three, I’ve learned pretty quickly that not every parenting “must-have” actually earns its hype. But balance bikes? Those are one thing I would absolutely buy again and again.
We first introduced one when my oldest was around 18 months (and honestly this is even a little late, you can introduce them much earlier!).
What I loved the most is how they helped build my kids’ confidence on a bike. Since they can keep their feet on the ground, they feel safe and in control while learning. There’s no fear of tipping over or depending on training wheels, which made my kids much more willing to experiment, glide, and pick up speed on their own.
I’ve also noticed how much using balance bikes encourage independence. My kids thrive in feeling capable, and because the bikes are lightweight and easy to maneuver, my kids could ride, stop, and steer without needing constant help from me. It turned neighborhood walks into something fun instead of a struggle. And trust me there were many days of struggle.
Another reason we became such a balance bike family is simply because they get kids outside and moving. My kids would happily spend forever riding up and down the driveway and the neighborhood, and it became one of the easiest ways to burn energy while building coordination and balance at the same time.
At this point, balance bikes are one of those parenting purchases I genuinely recommend to almost everyone with toddlers. They’ve made learning, movement, and outdoor play so much easier in our house. Plus, they’ll literally use them for YEARS to come.

A Simpler and More Lightweight Way to Learn
We recently got to try the new Strider 12 Comp and were instantly impressed! What makes it feel different right away is how simple and lightweight it is. The lightweight frame is designed to help kids focus on balancing and steering first which is perfect for my 18 month old who is still getting the hang of it.
He loves watching his big brothers cruise around and this version of the bike is light and durable enough for outdoor cruising.
And the adjustable seat height means we should be able to easily get another 2-3 years of use out of this bike as he keeps improving his skills.
It was extremely easy to put together – it took me all of 5 minutes to do. And my littlest has already put some miles on it and it is holding up great!
If you’re looking for something that supports those early milestones without adding extra stress, the Strider 12 Comp is one of those purchases that is completely worth it.
It’s simple, well-designed, and genuinely helpful in a stage that can sometimes feel a little overwhelming as a parent. And when teaching a skill that seems so challenging! Every kid learns at their own pace and I love that balance bikes support that.
