What’s It Like Living In… Thorndike, Maine

Are you on the move? Trying to figure out what state, city, or town you want to live in next? Well, that’s why I’m here with the “What’s It Like Living In…” series. If you’ve ever watched a hallmark movie, you know the charm of a small town. More and more, people are looking to move out of big cities and find a slower pace to life.

What’s It Like Living In… Thorndike, Maine

If you are looking to live that small town life, look no further than Thorndike, Maine. Thorndike is a town in Waldo County that offers its residents a suburban, rural mixed feel.

According to BestPlaces.net the population is just under 900! But with the median home value about $150,000 and the median rent just above $600, it’s one of the more affordable places to live. As you can imagine, this means a lot more people opt to buy than rent, with 77% owning homes and only 23% renting.

I will admit, I have never been to Thorndike, but I chatted with my friend, Mike Mayer, who is the Executive Director at Metsmerized about why he lives there and why he thinks it’s a good fit for other millennials.

How long have you been living in Thorndike?

I have lived here for 10 years.

Why is it a good fit for twenty-somethings to live?

I think it’s a good fit for young adults because all the amenities you would need are within a 30-minute drive. It’s also an area of growth in the state right now with other young families moving into the area.

What is your favorite part of living there?

My favorite part of living in Thorndike is the small town feel while still being close to bigger towns that have the entertainment and culinary opportunities that meet our needs.

What is one thing that may surprise people about the area?

The one thing that might surprise people about the Thorndike area is the how big a role the Amish community has in the local economy.

Anything else you’d like to add?

Thorndike is an up-and-coming town that should continue to see growth in the coming decades. Despite the growth, it continues to feel like a small community that has come together over recent years to make the area a better place to live.

Share your favorite spots to visit and restaurants to eat at!

Our absolute favorite place to eat locally is Ralph’s Cafe, amazing breakfast and baked goods. We also have a terrific brewery close by, Lake St. George Brewery, that hosts great events and food trucks.
