Being a student will take on a rollercoaster of emotions and experiences. One minute, everything is going well, and the next, you are lost, and you don’t know your next steps. This can leave you feeling stuck, anxious, overwhelmed and unprepared. In turn, this can negatively impact your motivation to do anything and make decisions very difficult.
It is important to acknowledge when you feel this way, so it doesn’t go too far and leave you feeling isolated from your friends, frustrated and riddled with self-doubt. This is a rabbit hole you do not want to go down.

1. Community and support
When you’re feeling lost, it’s tempting to pull away from people—but staying connected is one of the most powerful things you can do. Isolation often makes confusion and self-doubt louder, while connection reminds you that you’re not alone in what you’re feeling. Reach out to friends and family, even if it’s just to talk about everyday things. You don’t always have to have the “deep” conversation to benefit from being around people who care about you.
It’s also worth remembering that your professors and academic advisors are there to help you, even if it doesn’t always feel that way. Asking for guidance, clarification, or support doesn’t make you weak—it makes you proactive. They’ve worked with countless students who felt unsure about their paths and may offer more insight than you expect.
Additionally, consider joining a club, organization, or volunteering for a cause you care about. Being part of something beyond your classes can give you a sense of belonging and purpose when school feels overwhelming. You might also look for a mentor—someone a little further along than you, whether it’s an upperclassman, professor, or professional in a field you admire. A mentor doesn’t need to have all the answers; sometimes simply having someone believe in you and offer perspective can make a huge difference.

2. Take care of yourself
When life feels uncertain, taking care of yourself can feel like the last thing on your to-do list—but it’s actually the foundation everything else rests on. You can’t make clear decisions or feel hopeful about the future if your body and mind are constantly running on empty.
Start with the basics: aim for enough sleep, drink water, eat nourishing foods, and move your body regularly. These simple habits have a bigger impact on your mental state than most people realize. Regular movement—whether it’s yoga, walking, dancing, or working out—can help release stress and give your thoughts some breathing room.
Equally important is emotional self-care. Be gentle with yourself during this season. Feeling lost doesn’t mean you’ve failed—it means you’re growing. This stage is uncomfortable, but it’s also completely normal. Reduce self-criticism as much as possible by paying attention to your inner dialogue. If you notice you’re speaking to yourself in ways you’d never speak to a friend, pause and reframe those thoughts with kindness.
Make time for small moments that bring you peace or joy, even when everything else feels chaotic. Journaling, listening to music, being outside, or simply unplugging for a short time can help reset your mental state and remind you that life doesn’t have to be perfectly figured out to be meaningful.

3. Take action and build momentum
It can be hard to make decisions and take action when you feel lost as a student. However, small actions, regardless of what they are, can be extremely helpful to get you started and build momentum. Remember, nothing is permanent, and you can always pivot. This is one of the biggest things that people forget, and they put a lot of pressure on themselves to find the perfect first step that takes them in the right direction. But life doesn’t work like that.
If you don’t know exactly what you want to do, then consider what steps you can take that will move you forward to build your self-esteem and confidence. Identify things you enjoy, your strengths and how you can use them, for yourself and others. Start to build a student CV with everything about you that may be relevant, so that you are as prepared as you can be.
Action could simply be conversations with different people and research. As you move, talk and learn, you might start to identify things you don’t want and the things that you can explore.
