In the crazy, complicated and challenging world we live in, people and events test you on a daily basis from the day you are born. You start to have internal and external conflicts, pressure put on you, and tough decisions to make. But what about when you are old enough to become a part of a romantic relationship? Are you ready? Most people think they are. However, you must have love for yourself before you can embark on the vast and complicated journey of loving another person.

Why is loving yourself so important? Well, let me tell you, the experience you have discovering yourself teaches you things that nobody else can. It is the respect, love, and understanding of yourself that helps you build relationships with others and be able to have that deep connection with a person beyond your attributes on paper, that undying love that succeeds all other things you will accomplish in life.

How do you love yourself, though? Through personal experience, I can tell you the deep connection you can have with a significant other doesn’t happen overnight.

  1. Embrace your intelligence – You shouldn’t play dumb for anyone. The intelligence you have is an extraordinary trait, so embrace it and you will eventually attract a like-minded person.
  2. Fall in love with your quirks – Everyone has hilarious quirks or unique qualities. For me, my quirks include a hatred of warm money and an extreme fear of spiders. Whatever it is, love it about yourself! These little exclusive qualities are what make you rare and special. It sets you apart from the rest of the world. You can’t be duplicated and that is an incredible thing to fall in love with.
  3. Appreciate your appearance – In my case, I have a larger nose than most people. And you know what? I rock it like nobody is looking! How you look defines who you are; the characteristics you were given set you apart from others. So shake your booty, dance with your long legs, and show off that birthmark you have on your forehead. Because you know what? Nobody else is like you, so be proud of your appearance!
  4. Unleash your creativity – What is something you are good at? Writing? Building? Drawing? Math problems? These are qualities you were given to help you excel in life. Be creative in whatever way you can. For me, it is in my writing and my ear for music. I played the piano, flute, alto saxophone, and have a keen eye for reading sheet music. Whatever your talents, use your creativity to your advantage, in school or your career.
