8 New Book Releases Coming This October
There’s something about October that makes me want to read everything. Give me a cozy blanket, an unnecessarily large cup of coffee, and a book that’s just a little dark, strange, or atmospheric, and I’m happy. Thankfully, the October 2026 book releases understood the assignment.
This month’s new books include cursed ballet auditions, gothic thrillers, paranormal romance, historical mysteries, family rivalries, and even a little Christmas magic for those of us who start thinking about the holidays before Halloween is technically over. There are also a few quieter, more thoughtful additions to the list, including books about raising the next generation of women and helping kids navigate big emotions.
Basically, October’s releases are all over the place in the best possible way. Whether you want something spooky and slightly unhinged, a mystery to disappear into, or a thoughtful book to read and pass along to someone you love, here are some of the new October 2026 books worth adding to your TBR.

The Finalist by Faith Gladwin (October 6)

Perfect for fans of dark academia and psychological horror, The Finalist follows aspiring ballerina Eden as she competes in an elite month-long audition at the eerie Deveraux Manor. While navigating fierce competition, a complicated attraction to her enigmatic mentor, and the challenges of living with juvenile arthritis, Eden discovers the manor harbors a deadly curse. As dancers begin disappearing one by one, she must decide how much she's willing to sacrifice for the role of a lifetime.
My Violent Muse by Rosie Sycamore (October 6)
Blending gothic suspense, queer romance, and psychological thriller elements, My Violent Muse follows Morello, a struggling artist whose life changes when she's offered wealth and opportunity—at the cost of helping eliminate powerful predatory men each year. As years of secrets, manipulation, and violence catch up with her, a new romance and anonymous threats force Morello to confront whether she can finally reclaim control of her own story before everything she's built comes crashing down.
Heirs of Infamy by Kyla Zhao (October 13)

If you love high-stakes heists, slow-burn romance, and richly detailed historical settings, Heirs of Infamy deserves a spot on your October TBR. Set in 1940s San Francisco Chinatown, this atmospheric YA novel follows Alexis Sung, the daughter of a powerful crime boss, and Zachary Ren, the heir to a rival family, as they're forced to work together on a dangerous heist that could save both of their families. As enemies become reluctant allies, their growing attraction threatens everything they've been taught to protect. With its blend of historical fiction, family loyalty, and irresistible enemies-to-lovers tension, Heirs of Infamy is a compelling read for fans of Divine Rivals, These Violent Delights, and cinematic coming-of-age adventures.
The Foreign Correspondent's Wife by Jenna Helwig (October 20)
Historical mystery fans won't want to miss The Foreign Correspondent's Wife, a captivating thriller set in post-World War II Paris. When former journalist Kat Kelly discovers the murdered body of a fellow culinary student, she finds herself pulled into an investigation that reaches from diplomatic circles to the city's dangerous underworld. As more secrets come to light and another murder rocks Paris, Kat must uncover the truth before the killer strikes again. Rich with atmosphere, suspense, and a fascinating postwar setting, this mystery is perfect for readers who love clever heroines, historical intrigue, and twist-filled whodunits.
Tomorrow I’ll Be Happy by Jessica Hische (October 20)

From the bestselling creator of Tomorrow I’ll Be Brave and Tomorrow I’ll Be Kind comes a beautiful reminder for kids (and, frankly, the grown-ups reading with them) that a hard day doesn’t mean tomorrow will be hard, too. Tomorrow I’ll Be Happy pairs Jessica Hische’s signature hand-lettered illustrations with an age-appropriate look at emotional opposites, making room for sadness, worry, and other tough feelings without getting stuck in them. It’s hopeful without asking kids to pretend everything is fine—a lovely addition to the bookshelf for families working on emotional awareness, resilience, and finding a little light after a difficult day.
Haunted Hearts by Hanna Harp (October 27)

Just in time for Halloween, Haunted Hearts brings paranormal romance, gothic vibes, and a seriously intriguing twist: you are part of the love story. The follow-up to Hanna Harp’s viral Haunting the Hunter returns to Callie and Cade’s world while breaking the fourth wall and casting the reader as the ghost at the center of an otherworldly romance with the male main character. It’s dark, forbidden, immersive, and definitely not your standard paranormal romance. If your October TBR calls for something a little spooky, a little spicy, and genuinely different, this one deserves a spot.
What do i tell my daughter? by Katie Trexler (October 6)

What Do I Tell My Daughter? is the kind of book that feels like a conversation women have been having with one another for generations—about what we’ve learned, what we wish we’d known sooner, and what we want the next generation of women to carry with them. Katie Trexler brings together hard-won wisdom about navigating womanhood, relationships, ambition, identity, and the complicated realities girls will eventually encounter as they grow up. Thoughtful and timely, it’s a meaningful read for mothers raising daughters, but also for anyone reflecting on the lessons they’ve learned along the way—and which ones are worth passing on.
A Curse for christmas past by morgan lockhart

For anyone who isn’t quite ready to give up spooky season but also has Christmas on the brain, A Curse for Christmas Past feels like very convenient timing. Morgan Lockhart blends holiday magic with something a little darker, delivering a story filled with curses, secrets, romance, and the kind of past that refuses to stay buried. It’s a fun pick for that very specific stretch of fall when you want your reads to be cozy and festive—but you’d still prefer a little mystery and supernatural intrigue mixed in with the Christmas cheer. Technically this came out in September but trust me, you'll want to add it to your TBR!
which book will you read first?
October’s new releases are giving us plenty of reasons to ignore our already-overflowing TBR piles. From cursed ballet auditions and gothic romances to historical mysteries, complicated conversations about womanhood, and even a little early Christmas magic, there’s a surprisingly wide range of books to choose from this month.
Personally, I love an October reading list that feels a little darker and stranger than usual, and there’s no shortage of that here. But I also appreciate having a few thoughtful, hopeful reads mixed in—because apparently we cannot survive on haunted houses and murder mysteries alone.
Whether you pick up one of these books or somehow convince yourself you need all of them, I hope you find something here that makes you want to cancel your plans, make something warm to drink, and spend the evening reading. Happy October reading!
