Thinking to doing

I am very good at imagining my life and how I would like it to look. I’ve dreamed up different scenarios of jobs, relationships, and what it would be like to live in another city or country. It is very easy to think about something and tell yourself what it would be like. It’s harder to let yourself actually find out what it’s like. This year, I am trying to turn my thoughts into actions.

How do I do this? I have spent a good amount of time trying to figure out why I don’t have “the life I’ve imagined” and I have realized it is sort of because I’m waiting for it to happen. There is no point at which life just starts. Or, more accurately, it already started. It started the moment you came screaming and crying into the world and took your first breath. Now, as we grow and learn and develop interests and opinions of how we’d like our lives to be lived; now is when we have to make these things happen.

I am not going to wake up on my 25th birthday thinking, “Today is the day my life begins! Now I will love exercising and figure out exactly what I want to do with my career!” Nope, nope not happening.

Today, and each day, is the day I get to make the things I dream about happen.

So how can I do that? I’ve thought about this often and have asked myself, “What do I want to do?” and “What makes me think I can’t do that?

We are our number one road block. It is so easy to feel like you don’t deserve something or think that you aren’t ready/smart/good enough for something to happen. Really, all we need to do is to decide what we want and then take steps towards it.

I realize, this is easy to think and harder to implement. For myself, I’m finding that I need to work up to bigger actions.

So, I make little decisions such as instead of going home and throwing together pasta or something easy for dinner, I’ll stop by the grocery store and pick out ingredients to try something new. It is a very simple action, but it has helped me break my routine and reminds me that all I need to do to achieve something I want is to take actions towards it.

If you are like me and are feeling stuck in place and not sure how to get where you want to go, take time to think about what you want and what you enjoy. Then, let yourself know and believe that you deserve to have that. Finally, decide to do it.

Decide to go for what you want and find ways that work for you to get there. Have you always wanted to run a marathon? Figure out why it’s important to you to run 26.2 miles in a row and then tell yourself, “I can 100 percent do this!” The next thing you need is to run the first mile. Even if you just run one mile and then stop for the day, you’ve started towards your goal.

The hardest part about acting open your thoughts is taking the first step. Figure out what motivates and excites you, and then run towards it. You deserve it.
