Are you an expert in something? It could be literally anything, but being an expert or having a specialist skill set opens a pathway to many career opportunities. Even better, it opens the path to career opportunities you may genuinely enjoy. Instead of trying to force yourself into different roles or jobs because they pay well or are highly regarded, you can spend your time earning money by doing something you’re legitimately fond of.
How can you turn your expertise into a source of income? It may depend on what you’re an expert in, but these options are immediately on the table.

Teach
The most obvious way to turn your expertise into a career is to become a teacher. Granted, that sounds a lot easier said than done, though it is one of the more viable ways to make money from your special skills.
Let’s face it, the world needs more teachers.
You can go down the traditional route of obtaining teaching qualifications and then getting a job at a school or college – but that’s not always all it’s cracked up to be. A lot of teachers moan about being paid poorly, though you do get a decent number of holidays every year. Instead, you could go down the less conventional route of providing online tutoring services. It’s a fine idea if you have a specialist subject and are passionate about teaching it.
The hardest part is finding pupils, but you’ll see plenty of great teaching platforms out there that basically do this for you. You get to arrange your schedule, teach as much or as little as you want, and make money from your expertise.
Create Online Content
Content creation is without a doubt one of the most revered careers of the 21st Century. It began as this niche thing, but now so many people make a living by making content. If you’re an expert in a particular field or topic, then content creation could be the perfect career path for you.
It’s the simplest of simple concepts: make content about your specialist subject.
You can do this via:
- Social media content
- Written blog content
- YouTube videos
- Or all three!
Will you see overnight success? No. It’ll be a bit of a grind, but with the right marketing strategy (and great content), you could be on your way to earning income by talking or writing about something you genuinely enjoy.
That’s the best thing about content creation as a full-time job or side hustle; you can truly devote all of your time to the topic that means the most to you. Make educational content if you’re passionate about things like ancient Roman history or physics. Create instructional videos if you love DIY and gardening – or make fun content about F1 and other sports. The world’s your oyster; start content creation as a hobby, then see if you can develop it into a proper career.
Become A Consultant
Consultants are important people who help other important people make big decisions. You’ll find many different consultants out there, though the most common is a specific business consultant. A company hires you to help them decide on one thing or another, depending on your expertise.
For example, you’re an absolute finance wizard, so they consult you to help with budgeting decisions. Or, you’re a marketing genius, so they consult you about their latest marketing strategy, and you help them develop a winning campaign.
You can already conjure up many other possibilities in your head from those two examples alone. The crux is that you sell your expertise to different businesses and they pay for your assistance. Consultancy is a high-paying domain, though very competitive. You’re also only likely to be successful if you have a great track record and are highly experienced.
In that sense, it’s likely only feasible for people who’ve spent many years working in a particular field and want to go at it alone. E.g. You worked your way up the marketing ladder for years and became the manager of a marketing team. You’ve got loads of experience – and evidence of said experience – so you decide to become a marketing consultant. Businesses are more likely to hire you because they can see a history of successful marketing campaigns under your management.
The same applies to any other expertise; you need to be established in that area if you want to become a consultant.
Write Books
You could classify books as a form of creating content, but it’s deserving of a separate mention because it’s quite niche. Content creation is more regular – you’re writing blogs a few times a week or posting videos every month on YouTube. It takes more time to write a book, and you’re doing it for educational purposes.
This idea works brilliantly if there’s a gap in the book market within your field of expertise. For example, you might have a chronic medical condition that receives very little coverage. There aren’t any books out there explaining the condition or giving real-life insights into what it’s like to live with it. This opens the way for you to make a book like this to help educate others and provide support.
Yes, that’s a very specific example, but you can think of many others. Maybe you’re really into fitness and notice that nobody’s made a book about modern lifting techniques or debunking all the common strength training lifts.
It’s one of those things that becomes more open the more you look into it. The benefit of writing a book is that you don’t have to do it that often and can keep getting royalties from it. Like all of the options on this list, success isn’t instantly guaranteed; maybe your book should be a side-hustle just in case it doesn’t take off.
The purpose of this post is to prove that it’s completely possible to turn your expertise into a source of income. As mentioned above (and in a few other sections within this post), these ideas don’t have to become full-time careers. You have the freedom to make what you want out of them; if you want a secondary income source alongside your main job, then these ideas are perfect for that.
