Ever since grade school, we have been told how to study. From sitting quietly and listening to the teacher to then secluding ourselves away at a desk in utter silence, as a way to revise for exams. For some people, this kind of studying really can help.

They need the focus and peace to be able to really absorb the information. But as with everything, one size does definitely not fit all. And according to the, these practices are pretty outdated and are not particularly scientifically sound.

Plus, for many, these methods can actually be counterintuitive. We all learn and absorb information differently. So the key is being able to find out what works for you so that you can excel and thrive, rather than just survive at grad school.

If you’re about to embark on a program of study or have recently returned to college to further your education, then here are some tips and tricks to help you to study better. Try and few of them and see what you prefer. Study and revision don’t have to be a method of torture!

1. Change Your Study Location

Many people will swear by studying in the library. There is quiet and an atmosphere that is completely conducive to studying and getting in that frame of mind. While that is all very well, it is a good idea to change up your study location from time to time.

Our brains associate things by location, smell, and color. So if we change the places that we study, our memory is more likely to be triggered in different locations. When it is just the same one, your brain gets used to your surroundings and according to scientists, doesn’t absorb the information as quickly.

Mix it up with a study session in the park, in your room, the library or a coffee shop. It is meant to increase the likelihood of you remembering what you have learned.

2. Don’t Study Alone

For some things, especially cramming for an exam, more people will prefer to go it alone. It gives them the quiet and lack of distraction that they will need. But for other projects, you should never underestimate the power of your peers.

When you work together in small groups, there is power in numbers. You can get much more covered, as well as see things from a different point of view. You can discuss things and ask each other questions. When you’re alone and don’t fully understand something, then it can mean you simply stop or just carry on unsure about that specific point.

When you’re with others, you will be able to talk to your peers that may understand it and can explain it to you in layman’s terms. So look for a study buddy or a small study group that you could join or even form one yourself.

3. Look For Study Guides

Now more than ever, with the technology that we have at our fingertips, we can really use that to help us improve how we study.

We can search online for answers, as well as use sites like for lecture notes and study guides. So it is time to utilize these kinds of thing if you’re not already. Look for study guides for the topics that you’re covering, and you’ll be able to study much more effectively.

Study guides can give you a structure to follow as well, so if you feel that you’re quite lost with this kind of thing, and never know where to start, then it could be really beneficial to you.

4. Make Yourself a Mind Map

For those of us that are visual learners, it is a good idea to create something large and visual to look at. For many, a mind map can work really well.

Using a large piece of paper, or several small ones, it could be something that you have on display near your bed, for example.

Start with one topic and write down the key points about it. Then move on to other topics, until it is all connected. It can be a good way to start off your study, as you can see what you already know or remember about certain topics, and then you know where your weaknesses lie.

Other things that you can do to help remind you of certain things could be going old-school with creating some flashcards for yourself, for example. Using a keyword around each topic, you can have someone test you on it and let them know what you know about it. This can be great for definitions where that you need to remember, for example.

5. Test Yourself

As much as we don’t enjoy exams or testing, it really is a good way of testing our what we know. So looking for past exams to take or creating your own little test, can be a good thing for you to do.

When you have done something wrong and then learn the right way, then it means you’re much more likely to remember it. So testing yourself can really make a difference.

6. Get Enough Sleep

There is a reason why sleep deprivation is used as a method of torture. It means that people can’t function properly and can actually affect their health. So to make sure that you’re able to function as well as you can, then you need to make sure that you’re getting enough sleep.

It can be hard at college, as there can be so much going on. But if you choose to commit to getting eight hours of sleep each night, then it can really help you to study. You’ll be focused, and you’ll be able to see your GPA rising.

So as you can see, it doesn’t have to be anything super profound or extra special in order to study better. It simply means making some changes to what you have been doing already and making a commitment to improving. Have any of these things helped you in the past before?
