Let’s volunteer: 7 ways to give back this May

Give Back

Giving back is one of the most rewarding things we can do. Most of us have volunteered at one time or another whether is was for school, work, a friend or family member, or just because we wanted to. Volunteering is something we don’t give much thought to but we should more often. I know I am guilty of not doing it as much as I can to help.

In honor of GenTwenty’s month of ‘giving back’ I wanted to inspire some of you by thinking outside the box a little. Most people thing volunteering means going to a soup kitchen and serving food. This is a great thing to volunteer your time to but there are other things out there you can do as well. A good rule of thumb is picking something you are passionate about.

For the animal lovers out there – If you love animals try volunteering at your local animal shelter. There are plenty of pets that need some extra love and attention before they find a new family.

Enjoy working with kids – If this is your interest, you should try signing up to volunteer with the Boys and Girls Club or Big Brother Big Sister Organization, or try becoming a youth league coach for a sport you love like baseball, football or cheerleading.

Do you like building things with your hands? – If this is you, you should check out Habitat for Humanity. There are plenty of local chapters looking for volunteers to help build decent homes for families in need right here in the US. Their mission is to put God’s love into action by bringing people together to build homes, communities, and hope.

Affected by cancer, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, etc. – Most of us have been touched by one of these diseases we wish would go just way already, but that is not the reality. Try volunteering for any one of them. There are so many local chapters that need people to help at events or in the office. If you that isn’t your cup of tea, try starting a team to raise money and walk for the cause.

If reading is your thing – Look into volunteering at your local library. They always need help with stacking and cleaning books and most have youth programs you can help with too.

Community and city pride – If you love your community and where you live why not give back by volunteering at the Community Center or Recreation Department. They always need an extra hands with events they throw throughout the year.

Spend your Sundays at church – If you are someone who goes to church every Sunday you should look into volunteering there. You already have a community who shares your belief, so why not help out with all the charity work they already have going on.

These are only a few ideas for the many of great options out there to make a difference. When you are thinking about what to do this weekend try to get a friend to volunteer with you. With all that is going on the in world it is always nice to know that there are decent people out there who still want to help out in the best way they know how.
