It can be so each to get stuck in a rut at work. Often when we start new jobs, we’re filled with enthusiasm and want to strive to be the best.

So, the promotions can come thick and fast. But, over time we grow complacent, and our standards start to drop. Then, suddenly you’ve been doing the same job for a long time, and you’ve got no idea how to start moving forward again.

Ask Yourself What You Want

A common reason that careers stop moving forward is that people aren’t really sure what they want. If you’ve stopped pushing for promotions and you’ve let your standards slide, perhaps this isn’t what you want anymore.

Sit down and ask yourself where you want to be in five years’ time. Not what you think you should be doing, or what others expect of you, but what you want.

Remember, just because you’ve chosen a career, it doesn’t mean that you have to stick with it until retirement. You are much more likely to work well and rise through the ranks if it’s a job you love and feel passionately about.

Make a Plan

When you’ve decided what you want, you need to make a plan to help you to get there. Write a list of goals, both short and long-term. Give yourself a realistic time frame, and then work on finding ways to meet these targets.

It’s a good idea to look at the feedback you’ve received in the past. If there is an area you have struggled with, this might be the place to focus your attention in the short term.

Speak to Your Employer

The best person to help you with your promotion plan is your employer. Whether you are due for an appraisal or not, ask if you can have a meeting.

Take a notepad, and ask them what you need to be doing to improve, or where you are going wrong. You may be surprised by their answers. A good employer will sit with you and find ways to address issues, instead of simply telling you what’s wrong and then leaving it.

Look at Other Jobs

Sometimes, the best way to motivate yourself is to look at what else is available. It can’t hurt to check out the job market.

You may see a job for another company in the same industry that could be perfect. You might realize your job is the only one you want and be motivated to be better at it. Or, you could see something entirely different, that you fancy having a go at.

Company loyalty is a fantastic thing, that can take you far, but, don’t let it hold you back if you are unhappy. This is your life after all.

Smarten Up

One of the first things to slide when we get set in our ways and start to become complacent at work is presentation.

Check yourself. Are you clean, tidy and well presented? Is your shirt ironed and tucked in? Are your shoes clean? Have you reminded yourself how great you are? If not, do something about it. Get a new suit and look at your personal grooming. Believe it or not, this can really make an impression.

You should also take a look at your desk and how you present your work. Appearances are always significant when it comes to being successful at work, and in life.

Go Back to Basics

Another thing that can slip is the standard to which you are doing your basic job. The core, day to day elements of your job often get forgotten after a time.

You start taking less time and care on the smaller things, as you focus on other areas. Have a look at your key job description and make sure you are doing these things well before you try to build on them.

Go Back to School

When you’ve been working a job for a while, you find that things change. Those things you learned at school are no longer up to date, and young graduates are coming through with current knowledge and skills. The best thing to do about this is to make sure your education stays up to date, either with training courses or by going back to formal education.


Networking is exceptionally valuable in most fields. When studying an msw clinical you learn that networking is the best way to bring in new clients, stay relevant in your field, find jobs that aren’t advertised or find them before they are announced and make meaningful connections.

Also, being involved in the social side of your company is a great way to get yourself known and remembered. Perhaps unfortunately, the people that work hard, keep their head down and go home at the end of the day, never involving themselves in the social aspects of their job, are the people that get overlooked when it comes to promotions.

You don’t need to be the life and sole of the party. Just be there, having intelligent conversations with the people that matter.

Put Yourself Forward

Does your manager know you want a promotion? You might think it’s obvious, but, not everyone does. A lot of people are happy in the job role they’ve got and don’t seek to move forward. Don’t just assume management know what you want if you haven’t told them.

An excellent way to do this is applying when jobs come up, even if they don’t think that you are ready, it’s a brilliant way of letting them know you are serious and getting some experience of the process.

Getting your career back on track and pushing forward doesn’t need to be difficult. If it’s what you want, a few simple changes can be all it takes. However, if it’s not what you want, remember, it’s never too late to try something new. Nowadays more people than ever start a new career later in life and many go on to become incredibly successful.
