We’ve already talked a bit about essential oils and have provided some basic knowledge about oils. If you don’t know much about essential oils, pause here to read that post then come on back.

There are many benefits to using these concentrated oils. Today, I’m going to share how I use essential oils in my daily life.

Disclaimer: there are times that I talk about ingesting oils. If you plan to do this, you have to be very thoughtful about which brands you use. I recommend either Young Living or DoTerra. Personally, I use DoTerra if I am planning on ingesting them and NOW essential oils if I don’t plan on ingesting.

9 Ways I Use Essential Oils In My Daily Life

1. Allergies

When my allergies are really bad, I have to take allergy medicine. But if I catch it early or if it isn’t awful, I can use essential oils to help decrease symptoms. The best oils for allergies are lemon, lavender, and peppermint mixed together (⅓ of each).

There are two ways to use oils for allergies: ingest them or roll it on. You can mix all three and drink them like a shot, or you can put them in a roller and roll them on.

2. Headaches

When I am feeling a headache coming on, I get my oils. I use peppermint and frankincense and rub them on my temples and neck to help get a headache away. Frankincense is a bit expensive, FYI, but it is one I like to have.

3. Healing

Melaleuca (also called Tea Tree) is a good oil for itchiness and general bumps and bruises. My mom calls this the Boo Boo oil and uses it often for my brother. I bite my nails (I know, I know, I shouldn’t), but that means sometimes the skin around my nails come off and is exposed. I use a bit of antibacterial cream and melaleuca under a bandaid and it helps. So for boo-boos, when in doubt, use melaleuca.

4. Acid Reflux

I used to have acid reflux pretty regularly. Now, I have a glass of water with peppermint and lemon in the morning to keep it at bay. It works! 

5. General Tummy Troubles

Before I became a vegan, I had a temperamental tummy. Generally, any tummy problems (nausea or motion sickness) can be managed with ginger oil. DoTerra also has DigestZen which is amazing for tummy issues.

6. Cramps

So I have recently gone off my period and haven’t had bad cramps in a while, but the recommendation for cramps is clary sage. If you have bad cramps, the recommendation is clary sage, peppermint and Deep Blue (a DoTerra specific blend).

7. Muscle Cramps

I carry stress in my back, so when I am particularly stressed, I can feel it in my back. Deep Blue is great for muscle cramps.

Diffuser-Specific Ideas

For those of you who have a diffuser or are planning on getting one, here are a few ways I use mine:

8. Better Sleep

I almost always diffuse something at night. There are lots of ‘recipes’ for blends and NOW has a great mix specifically for nighttime, but lavender is a great thing to diffuse at night for restful sleep.

9. Focus

When I am sitting down to do school work, I wipe out my diffuser. I love to have a fruity blend, so I use lime (gosh, I love the smell), orange, and grapefruit. The floral smells are really great for productivity.

I have infused essential oils into my regular life. I don’t there is a day that goes by that I don’t use essential oils in some capacity (at a minimum I am diffusing something).
