As the days get shorter and flu season is on the rise, it always seems like it’s a little harder to stay healthy in the winter. Not to mention that while the holidays are fun and sweet treat-filled, it can be a stressful time of year as well.
Taking a few precautions to prevent illness and burnout this time of year are essential for a healthy and stress-free season! Here are a few things I do to stay ahead of the game.
5 Tips For Staying Healthy and Stress-Free This Winter Season
1. Start upping your Vitamin C.
Starting to take vitamin c when the weather gets a little cooler helps me feel like my immune system is getting a much-needed boost. If orange juice sounds unappealing, adding a supplement to your daily routine can help immensely!
I love the Nature Made Vitamin C to give me an extra boost. Make sure you talk to your doctor to make sure this supplement will work for you!
2. Keep hand sanitizer close by.
I can’t lie, I always have hand sanitizer on me. I use it before and after meals, and take extra precautions if I’m already feeling under the weather. During flu season, it’s even more important to prevent the spread of germs, both for your health and other people.
I’m a huge fan of the BabyGanics foaming hand sanitizer. The gentle formula doesn’t dry out my skin and I trust it to leave me protected.
Another easy tip is to carry wipes or towelettes with you to wipe down surfaces. Whether you’re on a plane or dining out, wiping down the area you’re sitting in can help protect you from germs too. It’s gross to think someone might have sneezed on the table right before you sat down.
Plus, being sick during the holidays is no fun. You’ll be more stressed out because your body is trying to repair itself. Take an easy precaution and sanitize your hands, especially if you’re around kids, the elderly, or someone who is sick.

3. Diffuse essential oils.
Essential oils can do wonders for calming you down and reducing germs around you.
Pick yourself out a cute diffuser to match your decor. This one from Artnaturals comes in two colors and has a natural look that fits well into many spaces.
Some of my favorite oil blends to diffuse this time of year are:
- lavender + frankincense (great for restful sleep!)
- frankincense + grapefruit (perfect for a rainy afternoon)
- grapefruit, lemon + orange (so energizing!)
- orange + cedarwood (a calming blend)
For a mood boosting pick-me-up add 5-10 drops of this Cheer Up Buttercup! blend to your diffuser. It includes bergamot oil, orange oil, grapefruit oil, lemon oil, and lime oil to refresh the senses. Yum!
4. Have a relaxing evening routine.
There are so many events going on this time of year, it can be hard to keep up! Don’t push yourself to do everything. Take at least one evening a week for some much-needed self-care. Nourish your body and your mind with relaxing activities.
Grab some bubble bath in a relaxing scent like lavender and take a relaxing bath. Add a bath oil or salt if you could use some detoxing or additional hydration. Use this time to read or meditate. Your body and mind will appreciate the rest!
Follow up your bath with a butter body, I like this one with coconut oil and honey, to keep the skin moisturized and hydrated. Dry skin in the winter can be so uncomfortable!
5. Stay prepped for you when start feeling on the brink of a cold.
I always have a few things in my arsenal just in case I start feeling sick. Whether it’s a cold or just seasonal allergies or something worse, having these things around helps me fight it off:
- A nasal spray: The fragile membranes in your nasal passages can dry out really quickly in cold weather. I keep a nasal spray with me to avoid nosebleeds.
- A facial spray: The skin on my face can be drier in the winter months. I love to give myself a spritz first thing in the morning and whenever I need a refresh throughout the day. It’s a nice little treat, too!
- Cough drops: For when your throat feels scratchy, these are nice to have on hand! Made with lemon, I find these to be very soothing.
- A cup of tea: A cup of green tea is perfect for winter afternoons. If I’m feeling under the weather, I tend to go for peppermint tea instead!
I also like to break out my humidifier when the weather gets really dry. Running it in my home for a few hours a day helps prevent dry skin! And as always, make sure you are getting enough sleep! Our bodies really suffer when we don’t sleep enough.
