NYC Fashion Week: Lessons from the street

When you think of the fall season you often imagine beautiful foliage, pumpkin spice lattes, crisp air, football parties, and most exciting of all: Fashion Week!

Fashion Week presents the opportunity for designers–big or small–to showcase what they have in store for next season, in hopes of inspiring new trends or remastering classics. Models strut down runways while spectators from celebrities to fashion icons behold the energetic shows.

Since fashion is an art form, Fashion Week collections can sometimes seem odd to everyday people looking to spice up their wardrobe. Often the fashions that are more noteworthy are the ones caught off the runway. They are the trends set and perfected by the people that attend the shows.

This year my favorite styles were found on the streets so let’s get down to it. Here are this year’s top trends scooped directly from the streets:

Statement Bottoms
They are bold yet delicate. They make a statement, but do it gently. These are statement pants and can add a unique touch to any outfit. Flower prints are really popular this season as well as metallic colors. The key to pulling off these pants is making sure the rest of your outfit isn’t as busy as the bottoms. Try throwing on a plain t-shirt and complimenting it with a simple necklace.

The Sophisticated Hipster
As twenty-somethings, we tend to want to sophisticate our look but still want to appear young at heart. The sophisticated hipster look combines business class with some funk. Throw on a pretty dress with some converses and you’re good to go.

The perfect way to spice up your look when going out is adding a piece with some feathers. However, it is easy to turn into Big Bird when the entire piece you choose is covered in feathers. Since we’re attempting to pull off NYC streets instead of Sesame Street, please remember that, in this fashion statement, less is more.

Buy it: Flutter Effect Shirt Dress $120

Buy it: Sabine Chiffon Feather Skirt $98

I have to admit, I recently became a fan of leather. I began adding in a few leather pieces into my closet – a skirt here, a shirt there – and soon I discovered I was in love. There is no better time to wear this material than in the fall. Leather can also be manipulated into a bunch of different looks, including rocker fab, sophisticated chic, or everyday street wear.

Buy it: Street-Chic Moto Jacket $24.80

Buy it: Leather Look Skater Dress $110

Though this year’s collection of runway looks from Fashion Week may be a little tricky to pull off, it’s evident that pulling off NYC street looks isn’t as complicated and is, well, more fun! This year’s trends make it easy to effortlessly put together a look for a fun night on the town with some girlfriends or for a business meeting at work.
