big life decisions, making life good choices, good adulting decisions

Making big life decisions can be very stressful as we grow up and navigate the real world. Do you rely on your intuition or do you ask around? Should you act immediately or is patience your best friend? Is there ever a right or wrong answer?

Big decisions aren’t easy to make and at times, we may find ourselves needing additional guidance to feel confident in the decisions we are making. Below are five strategies to help you make decisions on big life changes:

1. Make a list of what you value.

Our values and moral codes guide our behaviors, thoughts, and intentions. We tend to make decisions by leaning towards what we value the most and away from what we value the least. However, things can come in between the us and the values that encourage us to be our best selves.

For example, you may have taken a job offer because of the salary and benefits but later find out that you are really unhappy in that position. You might be settling for a job that doesn’t challenge you in any way because it’s close to your hometown and you’re scared of leaving.

While you might have had your reasons then, if your career isn’t what you hoped it would be, it’s the perfect time to look at what aspects of your job you value the most and what you value the least. Do you seek freedom in your work hours? Do you like working on extremely complex projects? Are you a big picture person or a details person? Do you like to do the same thing day in and day out or do you thrive in a fast-paced environment? Knowing what the way you work best gives you keen insight into the type of job that will allow you to thrive.

This translates to other aspects of your life as well. What do you value most in a relationship? Does your morning routine set you up for a productive day? When you find yourself unhappy, this is a good place to start.

2. Find out what aligns with your astrological sign.

You might occasionally turn to your horoscope for some insight, but celestial alignment can provide more than that. People have been using astrology for thousands of years to understand more about their lives. Astrology uses celestial positioning as a way to interpret what is happening in the natural world. Your sun and moon signs, as well as the positioning of the planets and stars, provide insight into the positive and negative energy that occurred around different events in your life.

Having an understanding of these energies and studying astrological charts can help you find insight into your future goals. Learning how to interpret the energies that are unique to you allows you align your goals with the optimal timing to achieve them.

3. Understand that you have control, and practice that control frequently.

One of the pillars of GenTwenty’s mission is to help our community understand the power of choice; Nothing is set in stone for your future. Every minute of every day we have the power to make choices that either serve us or slowly chip away at us. We give too much of ourselves to other people–we say “yes” when what we really mean is “no.” Ultimately, we end up helping no one and are left unhappy and dissatisfied without a reason why.

4. Have a Tarot Reading done.

I once took a business intensive where one of my fellow students made all of her big business decisions around Tarot Readings. For a little background, these readings are done by a clairvoyant expert with a deck of 78 cards that are then interpreted from the layout of the deck by the Reader. My colleague consulted with her reader every few weeks to make sure she was on the right track. This method really worked for her which is why she turned to it time and time again as she scaled up her business.

It’s important to keep in mind that while a Tarot Reading won’t give you explicit answers to the crossroads you’re facing, it can help you to use your own insights and wisdom to gain a deeper understanding of your life path. Remember the tip from number three — you’re in control of the choices you make and how you respond to any given situation.

5. Pay attention to how you feel.

The way we feel in any given situation speaks volumes. Usually if something feels off, it likely is. If you feel like something is a good fit for you, there is wisdom in that gut feeling — don’t ignore it. We are astonishingly in-tune with ourselves if we just stop to listen and interpret what we’re hearing.

There is no right or wrong way to go about making decisions for yourself. The best thing we can do is to look at the pros and cons, trust ourselves, and seek counsel when we need it.
