How To Create A Staycation Right In Your House

Have you ever heard of the term staycation? If I’m being honest, I didn’t know what it meant until about a year ago. And then, I thought “I need a guide on how to create a staycation,” because this is the year we’re staying at home.

A staycation is a vacation without going on a big or far-away trip. It can be spent either at your home, or somewhere close by.

I’ll be discussing more about the at home staycation in this post. If you’d rather get an Airbnb for your staycation, you would just factor that into the tips I’ll be sharing today.

How To Create A Staycation Right In Your House

Why Go On A Staycation

There are many different reasons why someone might want to have a staycation. I’m currently writing this post at a time where we are still living in a COVID world. Not much traveling is happening, which makes going on a vacation hard to do.

Even if you are reading this after COVID has become less of a concern, please tell me such a world exists, there are still reasons to plan a staycation. A major one would be to save money.

Sure, a vacation might sound more appealing, but there are ways to make a staycation just as appealing. All you have to do is follow these five steps I’ve listed below.

5 Steps On How To Create A Staycation At Home

1. Research

Before you start planning, you have to figure out what to plan. Are you focusing on a certain theme or inspired place? You could go the location route, where you turn your home into the destination.

Another idea would be a themed staycation, like the outdoors or a spa day. Once you get that decided the fun begins. I’m going to take you through my process of planning my staycation.

I’ve always wanted to go to Australia. I’m not sure when I’ll ever get there, so I thought, why not bring Australia to me?

To do this I did some research on their food, major places, activities, etc. I basically wanted to get a sense for the culture. This helped me come up with ideas that I could incorporate into my staycation.

2. Plan

This is my favorite part of the process. It’s time to take your research and incorporate it into a plan/itinerary.

What will you eat? What activities will you do? These are the questions you’ll want to ask yourself.

For example, if you are planning an outdoor staycation some ideas would be to camp in your backyard, grill out and roast marshmallows, have an outdoor movie night, go on a hike nearby, etc..

In this step of my staycation I determined that some of the activities I will be doing is watching Australia based movies, listening to music from Australian musicians, and going on virtual tours. I’ll also be making fish and chips and Australian-themed desserts, among other things.

3. Prepare

Now that you know what you’ll be doing, it’s time to gather all of your supplies, activities, food, etc. Think of this as your packing list if you were going on a typical vacation. This step could also be used to block off the date(s) your staycation will be taking place.

Will you need to take your paid vacation days from work? Are you inviting people over to join you during your staycation? This is where you will determine that.

To prepare for my staycation I started by picking a weekend and letting my family know. Then I made a list of all I needed to buy to create my ultimate staycation. I took into account any decorations I wanted to put up, supplies I needed for my activities, and food I needed.

Some of the items on my list were:

  •  Beach scented wax melts
  •  Australian candy (thank you Amazon)
  •  Ingredients needed for my meals and snacks
  • Our Lips Are Sealed movie (it’s not on any streaming services and I felt like being nostalgic as well)

4. Create

The day has come! Your staycation is either fast-approaching, or it’s the day of, and it’s time to transform your space. If we are going with that same outdoor staycation idea, what you would do here is set up your tent and create your outdoor movie space.

Here is a great way to do that. Then, when the time comes, start grilling your food.

To create my staycation I started by setting the atmosphere. Then I gathered all I needed for my activities and double checked to make sure I had all I needed for my meals.

5. Relax

You now have everything set up and can begin your staycation. Take a look around at what you created and enjoy your time spent relaxing.

Now you know how to create your perfect staycation! Whether you want to do it to save money, or mix up your weekend plans, staycations can be a lot of fun. If you decide to create your own staycation tag us on Instagram so we can see them.
