If you’ve been looking for an opportunity to break out of a rut and get out there with your significant other, the holidays offer plenty of opportunities to embrace the spirit of the season.

What’s great about holiday dates is that they are easy, plentiful, and in most cases, won’t break the bank.

Here are some of our favorite date ideas for the holiday season:

1. Ice skating: Many communities open up free or inexpensive public skating rinks during the winter. If you don’t own skates or are too embarrassed to show off your not quite Olympic level skills on the ice, other outdoor related options include sledding, skiing, snowman building, or making snow angels.

2: Christmas markets: Communities often host Christmas or Holiday markets over the weekends leading up to Christmas. Do a quick Google search to see when and where the markets in your area are going to be held and be sure to add it to your calendar. Normally the markets feature homemade or artisan items and they are a great for picking up unique gifts for the people on your list, one of a kind home décor, or a chance to sample new baked goodies.

3. Tree lighting: Does your city  have a big tree lighting event? Don’t know? Find out! These events are generally free and feature entertainment, treats, fireworks, and, of course, the lighting of the tree. New York is famous for its lighting of the Rockefeller Center tree, but they are far from the only city that does this. Who doesn’t love a massive, beautifully-decorated Christmas tree?

4. Make your own gingerbread house: There are two ways to do this: the hard way, and the easy way. Easy being you pick up a kit and all your favorite candies and go to town. Die hard gingerbread house professionals may try and go the hard route which includes making all your “building materials” from scratch. This takes a bit more time since you need to wait for all your walls and roof to bake, but it does make the activity last longer. Whichever way you go, be sure to apply candy generously then pose proudly with your creation to preserve the memories before you dig in.

5. Holiday movie night: Most people have a movie that they equate with the holidays, whether it’s something your family watched every year while you were growing up or it’s a tradition that you started on your own. Dust off your holiday movie collection, make some popcorn and maybe a festive holiday drink, and relive the memories with your date.

6. Volunteer: A perfect way to embrace the holiday spirit is to volunteer. You can wrap presents for children, serve meals, donate and help at the local food bank, stuff stockings for the less fortunate, or even sing carols.

7. Bake together: Holiday baking is a tradition for lots of people. It’s a fun, hands-on way to get into the holiday spirit and indulge just a little bit. Pick a family recipe or try something new you found on Pinterest.

8. Go shopping together: It needs to be done anyway, so why not make it as fun as possible? Have fun finding the gifts for the people on your lists and take your time. Make a game of pointing out the crazy, stressed out shoppers or guess who the person in line in front of you might be shopping for. Before you know it you’ll have crossed all the names off your list and had fun in the process.

9. Decorate: Deck those halls! Why not whip up a festive holiday drink (these Cranberry-Orange Sparklers sound divine) and cover your place from head to toe in tinsel. Haven’t invested in all the holiday décor quite yet? It’s fine to channel Charlie Brown and find a tree that works for your space or see if a friend or family member wants help decorating their place.

10. Check out holiday scenery: Take an evening and enjoy a stroll through a neighborhood or area in your city thats been decked out in cheer. Pick up a sweet treat and take in the bright lights with your date.
