charity budget

Giving back is something that we don’t always think about even though we should. Another part of the problem is that there are so many charities and organizations out there that it is hard to find which one you should give money to.

They all seem like great causes to give to (and in most cases they are, though sometimes they might not be). When you have a limited income it can feel impossible to find room to give back and to feel like you are making a difference.

But it’s so important to make giving back important. As a young twenty-something it can seem daunting, so what should you do? How can you find ways to give back on a limited budget?

Step 1: Do the math

The first and most important thing to do is run the numbers. Find out how much you are bringing in each month and how much you need to sustain yourself. Make a budget if you haven’t already. This should include all of your necessary expenses you need to live, debt repayment, and savings.

Take a look and see where you could trim some fat from your budget. Maybe you could pack lunch a few days per week or give yourself a pedicure at home once a month.

Step 2: Start small

Once you have determined how much money you have left over at the the end of the month you can adequately allocate it between your needs and how much you can give to charity.

Even if it’s only $25 a month, you can always increase the amount you are giving as your income increases. Regardless, every dollar makes a difference.

Step 3: If you really can’t afford it, volunteer

If you are really strapped for cash and you can’t bear to give up even $25 a month then find somewhere to volunteer and give back to the community. If you can spare a couple hours a month or even a week and secure a great volunteer gig you will find that you are feeling great about how you spend your time.

The most important thing when it comes to giving back is to find something that is really meaningful to you. Giving back should be an integral part of who you are.

Our generation sometimes get so caught up in their busy lives, finishing school, landed a great job and working on their love life they forget to give back to the community. Finding a charity to donate to that is close to your heart is important, it will make you feel good about what you are doing and no matter how small the amount it that you are giving, you will make a difference.
