10 Ways To Celebrate Make A Difference Day

October 27th, 2018 is Make A Difference Day. Even though the 4th Saturday of October has been World Make A Difference Day since 1992, I hadn’t ever heard of it until recently. According to the website, since its inception, thousands of volunteers have have given back to their communities on this day.

If you’d like to get involved with a specific volunteer event, you cant find plenty of volunteer options near you right here.

There are so many ways to help out and serve your community, but there are things you can do today to help out!

How To Celebrate Make A Difference Day

1. Donate to a non-profit of your choice.

All non-profit organizations rely on support to fulfill their mission. Some receive government funds, many write grants, and even more rely on donations from individuals to do their work. As someone who works in the non-profit community, I can tell you that no donation is too small to make a difference.

If you’re interested in donating, you can do a search to find a local and/or national organization that supports the causes that matter to you.

Don’t really know who to donate to? The United Way is a national organization with local affiliates that provide funds to local organizations, so you can donate to them as well.

2. Do a Random Act of Kindness.

There are so many ways that you can make a difference in the lives of people you know (or don’t know). If you can’t find ideas on your own, the Random Acts of Kindness website has a list of great ideas!

3. Reach out to a friend or loved one.

Do you have a friend or family member that you haven’t spoken to in a while? Or someone who you know is struggling? Reach out to them! Call them or write a handwritten letter (gosh I love a handwritten letter). It is a small thing that can make a significant difference in someone’s day.

4. Make a difference in YOUR life!

Make a Difference Day doesn’t have to be about making a difference in the lives of other people, it can be about making an impact in your own life! Take a nap, go to the spa, get a pedicure, have dinner at your favorite restaurant that you don’t normally go to. Do something meaningful for you that will make a difference in your day!

5. Offer to babysit.

Have a close friend or family member who could use some help with the kids? Offering your time for a day to watch them while the parents can use the day to run errands or practice self-care is a great use of the day!

6. Donate items you aren’t using.

You can go through your closet, bookshelves, kitchen, makeup collection or any area of your home to find things you no longer use. Many of these items can be donated to local shelters, donation centers, or even Habitat for Humanity. Your gently used items can make a world of difference to someone else.

7. Volunteer somewhere local.

There are plenty of organizations in your local community who are in need of volunteer hours. Give your time and strength a few hours per month to help out!

8. Pick up trash.

Have you ever walked by a local playground just to see trash and litter everywhere? Be careful picking it up, but taking time to beautify the space you and your neighbors spend time in is worth the effort.

9.  Sign a petition.

There are pretty much always petitions floating around for change. Getting signatures is important for many of these movements to be seen and heard. Add your signature to the list of causes you care about!

10. Share something positive on social media.

Make A Difference Day is a great opportunity to share something positive on social media. Whether it’s spreading information about the day itself or simply posting a positive message, your positivity won’t go unnoticed.
