When putting together a resume, some people want to avoid showing their age, disguise a bad job history or try to get around the resume-screening process. However, you don’t have to be tempted to try any of the following “tricks” to get your resume noticed.

1. Don’t Always Use a Functional CV

Some may have advised you to use a functional CV instead of a chronological CV to disguise gaps between jobs, to hide being unemployed for a long time or job hopping. On the one hand, this type of resume is very simple: you list your skills and abilities without tying them to certain jobs or dates whereas a chronological resume is written in reverse-chronological order.

There aren’t any big issues with this particular resume format, however, that they may suggest the very things you are trying to hide. Most savvy recruiters will get suspicious. The functional format makes it hard to see your career progress and understand how recent your achievements actually are. So, in all likelihood, most recruiters won’t read your resume at all. 

2. Don’t Reduce the Font

Some friends may have advised you to shrink margins or the font in your resume instead of reducing the content. Many people believe that a resume shouldn’t exceed one or two pages. However, once a hiring manager sees your CV, you will be treated as a person who doesn’t know what to include or how to edit the resume. You don’t have to try to fit everything on the page. It’s better to write only the most important information that will show you in the most favorable light. 

3. Don’t Hide Your Age

Older candidates are often told to disguise their employment dates so that potential employers won’t find out their age. They think that including dates in their resume will make hiring managers scrutinize their capabilities. The truth is, it looks very odd when you write a resume without dates. Don’t try to hide your age, as it may do you good in turn. Hiring managers most likely want to know if you have recently achieved these skills or if it happened twenty years ago.

What you can do instead to focus the recruiter’s attention on your achievements rather than on your age is to remove all the jobs that are older than fifteen years. This way your most recent achievements will be more impressive while the older jobs won’t strengthen your candidature anyway.

4. Don’t Stuff Your Resume with Keywords

A lot of candidates try to stuff their resumes with obscure keywords in an attempt to catch more attention and get noticed during computer screening. You may surprised to learn that most organizations and companies don’t even use a screening process.

Don’t worry, if you are a qualified and skilled candidate, your resume will surely be noticed. Don’t tailor your resume to computer needs, because, in the end, it’s a human who makes the final decision about whether or not to invite you to an interview.
