We’ve all heard or seen the meme about never skipping leg day. Images of buff men with broad shoulders and thin chicken legs have graced the internet for a few years now. And that adage makes sense. But what we really should be focusing on is our core strength, because it’s at the core (forgive me) of our strength, balance, and stability. 

According to the Mayo Clinic, core exercises help train the muscles in your pelvis, lower back, hips and abdomen to work together. Strengthening your core muscles helps with balance and stability, and also helps you perform better from daily activities to other sports and fitness endeavors. Plus, strengthening your core helps prevent back injury or back pain. 

Though I’m not even 30 yet, I’ve started experiencing back pain and tension because I sit at a desk all day and then go home and write or watch tv on my couch. Not much movement! So I’ve been focusing on doing more stretching in the morning and before bed, and incorporating core work into my everyday life.  

Also, did you know that core muscles and abdominal muscles are NOT the same thing? If you did, that’s awesome, but if you didn’t, welcome to my boat! I thought I was working my core when really I wasn’t, and making sure I aimed for a more well-rounded workout that included key core-building moves has been essential to improve my posture, help my sleep (because no more back pain!) and help me stand taller.
